West Virginia Uncovered Home

Hampshire County

Established in 1754, Hampshire County is West Virginia’s oldest county. The county experienced significant action during the Civil War as the Confederate forces sought to control the vital B&O Railroad .

Currently, more than 20,000 people live in the county, making it the fourth-fastest growing in the state—in keeping with most of the Eastern Panhandle. This growth has led to a median income that is higher than the state average of around $29,000.
