Tucker County
Located in West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands, Tucker County was first settled by the Mound Builders, also known as the Adena people. On March 7, 1856, Tucker County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly from parts of Randolph County. At the time, in 1860, there were 245 families and 16 slaves living in the county. Currently, 7,321 people live in the county. Its 3,052 households have a median household income of $26,250. According to the 2000 Census, 18.10 percent of the population is below the poverty line. The county seat of Parsons still suffers from devastating flood in 1985 that killed 45 statewide and washed away around 350 industry jobs in Parsons. But with help from federal funding, Parsons plans to be a flood-free zone by 2012. Currently, Kingsford Charcoal Manufacturing employs 200 to 250 people, and a lumber company offers 80 jobs. With the Canaan Valley and Timberline ski resorts, tourism is the largest local industry.
